Rail Projects

Year 3 Earthworks

July 2021 - Dec 2022 | Groundworks, Ecology and Civil Engineering Works

Client

Network Rail

Location

Various: Sandhurst, East Clandon, Wood Street, Gillingham and Stroude

Duration

17 Months

The Project

Nationwide Engineering were tasked to clear the badgers and other mammals from the embankments in certain areas along the network within Wessex.

Allowing protection of the embankments from further degradation from voids beneath the railway and reinstating slipped assets such as the LOC cabinet and trough route.

Works were to involve the clearance and construction of a mammal excluded area on the Embankments at 5 locations

The embankment was required to be cleared of all vegetation which included trees less than 150mm diameter.

The badgers and mammals then had to be excluded from the embankments by adhering to Natural England and ecologist recommendations. Using infilling and one way gates.

The embankment was then netted, pinned and dug in at the edges to ensure no further intrusion within the embankment. This also included grouting of existing burrows after the 21-day monitoring process.

The drainage was then cleared and reinstated to allow for future use.

Realign trough route with further support by use of angle irons.
